I moved from New York to Davis, CA to start フローラパルス. Logically, the area was perfect for an agtech startup. We are close to UC Davis, a world-class research institution, our customers (orchards and vineyards) and the Silicon Valley ecosystem. Furthermore, the cost of living is reasonable, and we have access to talent and great weather.

I’ve come to love this area. The Greater Sacramento region is bursting with great restaurants, entertainment and outdoor activities, all budget friendly and for the most part easy to access. There are tons of parks and greenery – Sacramento especially has some wonderful walkable areas such as Midtown and Old Sac. In terms of business, lower costs are a big benefit. It’s easier to find reasonably priced facilities and affordable labor. As a startup, every dollar counts. Lower costs greatly increase our ability to achieve our goals without burning through cash and constant fundraising.

We are lucky to be located in the Greater Sacramento region and specifically in Davis. Our engineers and interns have been UC Davis graduates or students. It’s always fun working with fresh talent who are eager to learn and help us succeed. We’ve also collaborated heavily with amazing faculty at UC Davis, mostly plant science professors, who have helped us test and improve our technology.

I moved from New York to California specifically to start FloraPulse. California is well-known for having an amazing ecosystem of engineering/business talent, investors and great companies. The state makes it easy to innovate and find like-minded individuals to work with. It’s also a no-brainer since we are in agriculture and California has top-notch ag research facilities like UC Davis and a huge number of growers to work with and sell to. Finally, as we’ve seen through the pandemic, California has systems in place to help businesses succeed, such as SBDC advisors, free seminars and grants.

I love love love the Comedy Spot and have missed it dearly during the pandemic. I’m a big fan of standup comedy and have even dabbled in performing at a talent show (way back). The Comedy Spot offers live comedy almost daily and classes on standup, improv and comedy writing. Comedy is a great way to relax, relieve some stress and go with the flow before coming back the next day to the serious world of business!
